Ruminations on all things veterinary hospital operations, from the makers and supporters of Instinct.

Last updated: May 11, 2026

Veterinary practices rely on an ecosystem of tools: labs, imaging, inventory, payments, client communication, AI scribes, and more. The problem is… those tools don’t always talk to each other. You’ve felt the fallout: tab overload, double data entry, missing results, integrations that break the moment somebody pushes an update on either side.

When I talk with practices and hospitals evaluating Instinct EMR, the same questions come up again and again:

  • Will it work with our labs and imaging?
  • Can we keep our existing reference lab?
  • Will results flow into the record automatically, or are we back to manual uploads?
  • And what about all the new AI tools everybody’s talking about?

All of these are fair questions! Integrations help keep your team focused on patient care rather than clerical work. Every integration we build is in service of one of two goals: reducing manual steps or surfacing the right information at the right moment. If a partnership doesn’t do at least one of those, we don’t even bother. That’s also why we are investing in more scalable ways to connect with partners, including HL7 connectivity through LifePoint Informatics.

In this post, I’ll walk through the integrations we support and how they actually work.

Instinct EMR is a PIMS that combines medical excellence with complete practice management, so you can run your hospital with all-in-one trusted software. Book a demo today.

  • Bionote
  • Heska
  • IDEXX VetConnect
  • MicroVet Diagnostics
  • Moichor
  • Parasight System
  • Zoetis Point of Care Devices

HL7 Connectivity Through Lifepoint Informatics

Some of the most important integration work isn’t especially flashy. It’s the plumbing that helps systems exchange the right information reliably.

One example is our work with LifePoint Informatics to support HL7 connectivity in Instinct EMR. For supported workflows, this can help automate lab and diagnostic communication, including orders, status updates, diagnostic reports, request tracking, and PDF results. Orchard Harvest LIS is one recent example of that connectivity in action.

But HL7 is not a magic button that connects everything overnight. Each integration still depends on the partner system, the workflow, implementation details, and testing. It does give us a more scalable path for certain lab and radiology connections, and it’s an important part of how we continue to expand the ecosystem around Instinct.

AI & Documentation Tools in Instinct EMR

Clinical documentation has been one of the fastest-moving spaces in veterinary technology over the last 18 months. We’ve been building and partnering aggressively here. The reason is simple: few categories have the same near-term potential to give our colleagues their nights and weekends back.

ScribbleVet (Part of the Instinct Family)

ScribbleVet is our own AI scribe, purpose-built for veterinary medicine and now part of the Instinct product family. It generates SOAP notes in seconds and auto-populates key information directly into the chart.

When we acquired ScribbleVet in January 2026, our CEO, Dr. Caleb Frankel, was clear with our customers and the broader market: Instinct will continue to support multiple AI scribe integrations and ScribbleVet will continue to support multiple PIMS integrations. We’re not closing the door on competing tools just because we now build one. Practices should pick what works for their teams.

Other AI Scribe & Documentation Partners

We give our customers choice, so we also integrate with several others:

  • CoVet: Automates the process of taking clinical notes and exports them into Instinct
  • Hachiko: A veterinary-specific AI platform trained on veterinary records, supporting your team from intake to discharge
  • Vetrec: Creates SOAP notes and clinical documents in seconds, populating the chart automatically
  • Talkatoo: Speech-to-text dictation that works in any field within Instinct EMR
  • Dragon Veterinary: Voice-to-text dictation that captures your dictated notes in chart documents and other fields

Built on the industry’s most advanced digital treatment sheets, Instinct EMR supports seamless hospital management, from improving patient outcomes to boosting revenue, streamlining workflows, and helping your team succeed. Book a demo today.

Inventory, Purchasing, & Compliance in Instinct EMR

Inventory touches everything: patient care, costs, controlled substance reporting, and compliance. Instinct EMR includes built-in inventory tools and connects to a growing set of partners for practices that need more.

Instinct Stockroom (Included)

Stockroom is our native inventory feature, built directly into Instinct EMR. It tracks inventory in real time as treatments are administered, manages low-inventory alerts and vendor order lists, syncs invoices, and reconciles product counts. No extra logins, no manual reconciliation.

Cubex

For practices using automated dispensing, Instinct’s bi-directional Cubex integration supports controlled substance tracking, cabinet-level dispensing automation, and seamless charge capture from the treatment sheet.

💡 One Instinct practice saw a 60% drop in missed charges YoY after implementing the Cubex integration. That translated to roughly $40,000 in recovered revenue annually.

Inventory Ally

A newer addition to the family: Inventory Ally uses your Instinct usage data and order history to drive automated cycle counts and restock recommendations. The result is less waste and more confidence that you have what you need on the shelf when you need it.

Pharmacy

Mixlab

Streamline prescription fulfillment by sending prescriptions directly to Mixlab Pharmacy from the patient’s Rx panel. A natural fit for practices that want a flexible, modern pharmacy partner, and the first of what I expect will be a growing pharmacy category for us.

How Instinct Came Out in a Recent Independent Report

In May 2026, VetSoftwareHub published part six of their Companion Animal Veterinary Software Guide. It’s an independent report by Jon Ayers (former CEO of IDEXX) and Adam Wysocki (president and founder of VetSoftwareHub), drawing on three surveys: 1,273 North American practices, 21 third-party software vendors who’ve actually tried to integrate with PIMS systems, and the PIMS vendors themselves.

Here are a few findings worth calling out:

  • Instinct earned the highest API openness rating of any PIMS surveyed: 4.25 out of 5.00, against a practice-share weighted average of 2.23.
  • Instinct also earned the highest customer satisfaction score: 5.77 out of 7.00, with specialty and referral hospitals giving us a 6.00.

It’s not a victory lap, though. The report’s headline finding is that the veterinary technology ecosystem is too closed for what hospitals are trying to do with their data. We agree. We’ve been pushing in the other direction for years, and we’re going to keep pushing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instinct EMR Integrations

Can I request a custom integration for Instinct EMR?
Yes. If there’s a tool your practice uses that isn’t currently supported, let us know. We have a Partner API so that our customers and third-party platforms can develop their own integrations that work with Instinct EMR.

How do I request a new integration for Instinct EMR?
We’re always building. If your preferred tool isn’t listed here, mention it during your demo, in onboarding, or any time after at [email protected]. We read every request and prioritize based on user feedback and workflow impact.

How reliable are integrations with Instinct EMR?
We prioritize stable, secure connections with minimal maintenance required from your team. Our supported integrations aren’t browser plug-ins or workaround scripts. They’re built and maintained for long-term reliability, and our 24/7 support team is here if anything ever goes sideways.

We’re Just Getting Started With Instinct Integrations

Veterinary medicine is in the middle of a major technology shift. New AI tools, new diagnostics, new ways to communicate with pet owners and referring vets. They’re arriving faster than any single EMR can keep up with on its own. That’s why we don’t try to do it alone.

We’re glad to support the veterinary ecosystem however we can. Sometimes that’s deepening a direct integration. Sometimes it’s further opening up our Partner API through new endpoints. Sometimes it’s sitting down with a hospital to make their existing tech stack actually work together. We’ve been at this for nearly a decade, and we plan to keep at it for many more to come.

If you want to see how Instinct fits with the tools you already rely on, or the ones you’re considering, book a demo and we can get into the details.

Instinct EMR isn’t magic… but it’ll sure feel like it.
