Ruminations on all things veterinary hospital operations, from the makers and supporters of Instinct.

It’s easy to forget about your veterinary CE allowance until you’re registering for a conference or staring down the end of the year. Then you’re trying to remember how much you have left, when it expires, and what you can actually use it for. And if “CE allowance” has always meant “conference money” to you, you may have more options than you think.

That’s why we created A Veterinarian’s Guide to Making the Most of Your CE Allowance, a free guide to help you figure out what to ask, what types of expenses may qualify, and whether professional resources and veterinary clinical subscriptions could be covered.

Your Veterinary CE Allowance Versus CE Credits

Your veterinary licensing board sets the rules for what counts toward your CE requirements, but your practice decides what your CE allowance can pay for. So even if something doesn’t count toward license renewal, it may still be eligible for reimbursement.

Depending on your practice’s policy, that could include more than courses or conferences with reportable CE hours. Professional memberships, books, reference materials, veterinary clinical subscriptions, and other professional tools may also qualify. Not every practice covers the same things, so it’s worth asking before you rule something out.

Know the Details Before the Deadline

The amount you have left is only part of the picture. You also need to know when you have to use it, whether unused funds roll over, and what your practice needs before it will reimburse an expense.

The deadline to make a purchase may not be the same as the deadline to submit your receipt. Your practice may also require preapproval for certain expenses. And if you’re considering an annual subscription, check whether you can buy it now and keep using it into the next benefit year.

Those details are a lot easier to sort out before year-end gets too close.

Could Your Veterinary CE Funds Cover Tools You Use All Year?

If your practice allows clinical or professional subscriptions, your CE allowance may be useful for more than a few days at a conference.

A drug reference can help when you’re double-checking a dose or interaction. Clinical decision support can save you from digging through multiple resources when you’re working through a case. And a veterinary AI scribe can help you get records finished before they follow you home.

The free guide walks through the questions to ask and includes a fillable worksheet where you can keep your balance, deadlines, rollover rules, and other CE details in one place.

Find Out What Your CE Allowance Can Do

Every practice handles CE funds a little differently. If you still have money left, you may have more options than you realized.
